Pawley’s Island, SC — On a recent bike trip to South Carolina, one of the things I was looking forward to was tasting some of that famous South Carolina Bar-be-que.  More importantly, the mustard based sauce kind of Barbeque.  The closest I came was at Hog Heaven, and it was fabulous.

There’s a famous Bar-be-que “trail” that’s been well documented on most of the cable cooking shows, and as I spent my first night on the road, I tried to identify some of the places I could find it.  I just assumed that the “Q” in South Carolina, featuring the mustard based sauce would be easy to find.

It wasn’t.  But when I stepped into Hog Heaven, in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina,  I was literally in “Hog Heaven.”  (I know, cheesy, right?)

Hog Heaven is a favorite for the locals in the area.  Serving fried chicken, seafood, country cooking and of course, barbeque.  They feature a buffet with all the sides you would expect.  Baked beans, cole slaw (to die for) mac and cheese, new potatoes, green beans, black eyed peas and my favorite, turnip greens. And they cook their greens the old fashioned way.

The people were nice, the service was good and the food was excellent.  Oh, and the banana pudding was “OFF THE HOOK!”

I have to say that the fried chicken was some of the best I’ve eaten.  Crispy, yet tender on the inside.  But I wanted the pulled pork and to try the sauce.

Now most of the mustard sauce based barbeque, from what I understand, is already pulled and mixed with the sauce.  Here, you apply their sauce to the barbeque.  They have all the other vinegar based sauces as well.  I must say that the sauce I used, and bought a bottle to bring home, was excellent.

So if you find yourself in the Myrtle Beach area, you won’t regret a visit to Hog Heaven.  It’s a tasty break from all of the amazing fresh fish and seafood you will have been eating on your visit.
