Dodging the RoadkillClarksville, Tn — Just flipping through the mail the other day, and lo and behold, a letter from “Black Beauty.”  Hmmmm, let’s see what’s on her mind.

“Hey there!  Black Beauty here!

Thought I would drop you a line and discuss 2019 (from where I see it of course).  I would have sent you an email, but I don’t have a computer.

I know you’re excited about the upcoming travel season so I thought I would share some observations with you since we’ll be spending a lot of time together (as always).

First of all, I want you to know I’m grateful for the home you’ve given me.  I’ve got all the best cleaning supplies, oils and fluids and a comfortable place to be when the winter weather blows in.  A lot of my relatives are stuck outside under a tarp and it can get pretty “dicey” out there.

You’ve come a long way since you started riding three years ago.  I’ve noticed that your skills have improved greatly and since I love a smooth ride, I appreciate how sleek and cool you keep us on the road. You were a little “rough” around the edges in the beginning.

Although that little incident in September (the accident) took me by surprise, it looks like we both made it through it with not too much damage.

With that said, I want to encourage you to keep your ego out of your throttle.  I’ve noticed that you tend to get a little carried away from time to time, and I just want you to stay within your comfort level.  We were both pretty embarrassed about that little “incident” AND a little banged up, but we’ll just live and learn.  Okie dokie?

While I do love the mountains and all of those little “twisties and thingys” (whatever), I DO love a nice wide open four lane or two lane back country road.  Like you, I love the sweet smell of the countryside and passing those “tractor” things and just getting into the countryside where things are simpler.  Not the hustle and bustle of the interstate.  So, do that for me, K?

I’ve heard you’re planning a trip to Sturgis this year.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about that part of the country.  I’ve also heard that you can get in some trouble out there, you know, the bars, the women, the late nights?  I’m ok with it though because like you, you’re traveling with some other “old” farts, and I respect the fact that you’re usually tucked away for the night by 8pm.

I can’t wait to ride the Black Hills, Needles Highway and all the glorious roads we plan to ride.  I hope you’ll take plenty of pictures.  Social media loves bikers and their motorcycles, and I DO love to show off!

I want to see Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and California.  Think you can make that happen?  My buddies tell me the Pacific Coast Highway is “Da Bomb!”

Finally, I’ll take care of you if you take care of me.  I’ll “giddyup” when you need it and I’ll come to a halt when something gets in the way.  Just keep your damned eyes peeled for those pesky “distracted” drivers.

Just keep me serviced and make sure I have a nice pair of “shoes” and we’ll be just fine.

Let’s do this!”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.
